Your photographs are good, but did you have permission from the band
to do what you did? By your own account you moved from your
assigned seat up to the edge of the stage and then took 226 shots with
a professional camera aimed straight in their faces for the duration of
the entire show. From what I can tell from the photos, you even moved
around during the show to get your shots. Like people who saw
you are saying, they thought you were from the press or with the band.
But the press is only allowed to shoot that way for the first 3 songs
of any show. Do you know why that is? Because it is distracting
and disruptive to have a big camera rig pointed in your face for a
whole show with somebody moving up and down along the stage with you as
you try to perform. I know fans take scads of photos, but
they don't usually use pro gear and they rarely move around like pros
do. If the band approved of what you did, no worries but if not, you
may have been a disruption and distraction to them during their show. Arnold A.

Not to start anything, but I think this might've been a better lecture if it began and ended with that comment.

What on earth was Alan talking about in this one? http://www.flickr.com/photos/plaidleaf/2800673555/in/set-72157606969595086/

Like I said, if you had official permission from the band to shoot
their whole show, no worries. But parts of your account were/are
confusing and gave a different impression. I've never heard of a band
giving any photographer permission to shoot like that w/o also giving
the photog press access to the pit, but you said you had to talk your
way past an usher to get up to the stage. Maybe GBS is just weird and
gives permission but no access, I don't know. If they are, they're an
exception to the rule. . You also said you were forwarding the pics to the band, but if you were taking them for
the band, of course you''d be handing them over since they'd belong to
the band.....but would you also be posting the same pics on a public
Flickr site? And if you took the pics solely for your own pleasure then
why forward them to the band? Considering all the truly pro shots they
have taken of themselves, why would there be any point in that? If I misunderstood the circumstance, I apologize. But I still say the original account could have been clearer. Peace out - AA

I'm sorry to have to post twice in succession, but I don't believe
in going back and editing my preexisting posts. I'm surprised this BB
allows members to do that. If you said it, then stand by it and go from
there. Your latest response gives the impression that you never
really did have the permission you said you did, either that or you
have some growing up to do, maybe both. If neither of those impressions
are correct, I'll apologize again for misinterpreting. You have
some talent as a photographer and a check of your bio shows you are
still very young. In case you have serious aspirations toward a
photography career and aren't just getting your fan impulses out, I'm
going to give you some (unsolicited I know) advice you can take or
leave as you will. Photography is always about the subject, never about
the photographer. Good photographs aren't trophies to show off how cool
you are or how close you got and the point is never about how
much notice you yourself got from anybody you shoot. The more you can
disappear behind your canera the better your work will be. Best wishes - AA

Webelo, Former Cub Scout? Former Den Leader here. Welcome to the OKP. You certainly jumped in with two feet. Many of us were taking photos that night. The band doesn't usually mind, especially if you don't use flash. This was the first time that the front of the ticket didn't say no cameras for my memory. I brought mine, hoping we'd be allowed to take photos but not expecting to. That said, I didn't get very good shots and had trouble seeing. I was curious to see what I missed on stage. I am surprised she was allowed to "crash" the pit. Maybe the issue is why didn't she sit in an empty seat outside the pit. But, that said, what's the harm? There seems to be a mountain here instead of a molehill. I only remember one show where Alan asked the audience not to take any more photos that evening. And that was in 2003 I think. As long as you're not using flash, I'd think it was okay, unless the band says otherwise. They use people's photos for the greeting page on the site. People can send them in hoping to see their photos posted there. Anne
And when the winds of change begin to blow, I'll whisper, "You're my lighthouse" in case you didn't know. Sons of Maxwell visit my website!: Anne's Philly Phan Site at http://www.gbsfanatic.com

AnneInPhilly:I am surprised she was allowed to "crash" the pit.
I'm not - the front was pretty empty through the entire GBS set. We were 2nd row behind the pit and ended up climbing into the front row behind the pit - the usher told us as long as those people didn't show up we could stay - I also saw at least 10 other people have similar ideas - and a few who actually climbed over the wall into the pit. Weblo - I have to ask, were you even *at* the show? Because honestly, at this point unless you're going to come out and say that she was in front of *you* specifically, and ruining *your* show, I think you're way out of line. FWiW, she was 2 rows directly in front of us. It's not my place to discuss exactly what permission she had and who it was from, but I will point out that if the band wanted her to stop, they probably wouldn't have posed for her as much as they did. Not only was she very cognizant and respectful of the people around her, (most of whom didn't show up until half-way through the set), but most of them asked for copies. I find it extremely annoying that you've decided to speak out on behalf of the anonymous people whose show you're sure was ruined. So while I doubt there's really any point to trying to argue with you, I feel the need to point out that you're NOT speaking for me.

I wasn't there (wish I had been though) so perhaps I shouldn't offer an opinion, but from what I've seen of the photos and read in the thread, I agree with you entirely, Anne.
